The Story of Gladys Aylward

A true story about what God can do with a surrendered life

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

God’s plan for our life is often very different from the plans we have, or others have for us. However, God, alone knows what He has created us to do, if we would only seek Him, surrender to Him and then persevere in His purpose for us.

My drama, ORDINARY TO EXTRA-ORDINARY, is a humorous, yet inspiring true story of Gladys Aylward (1902-1970), a hard-working parlor maid, who wanted to serve Jesus, her Savior. Gladys knew she was very ordinary but she had given her life completely over to the Lord to be used however He saw fit.
For Gladys it turned out to be China! Rejected by the China Inland Mission Training Center in London, she struck out on her own, in the 1930′s. She found herself in a country where she didn’t speak the language and knew no one.
Yet, the Lord had a plan for this little woman who had great faith in her God. She found herself running an inn for muleteers; unbinding the feet of little girls; stopping a prison riot and rescuing 94 orphans.
As she learned the language she shared the good news of the gospel wherever she went! Her life wasn’t easy but it went from ordinary to extraordinary.
Hollywood even made a movie about her in 1958, called The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. There were many inaccuracies in it, especially where Gladys falls in love with a Chinese Nationalist. Gladys was mortified! Her only love has been her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

“I wasn’t God’s first choice for what I’ve done for China… I don’t know who it was… It must have been a man…a well-educated man. I don’t know what happened. Perhaps he wasn’t willing… and God looked down…and saw Gladys Aylward… And God said – “Well, she’s willing!”  Gladys Aylward
